The Townhouse Gallery

The Association's Townhouse Gallery holds eight consecutive shows each year, two of which are solo exhibits and six are juried exhibits with prominent jurors from art schools, galleries and institutions in New York and surrounding areas, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum, Bruce Museum, and Museum of Modern Art.

BLACK, WHITE AND SHADES OF GRAY Show

This is a multimedia juried exhibit with cash prizes. We are asking artists to submit up to 9 pieces of artwork on the theme of 'Black, White and Shades of Gray'. Our jurors are professional local artists, Sally and Mike Harris

Jurors' Statement

Congratulations to all who are in this year’s Black, White and Shades of Gray exhibition. And thank you to all who submitted.

It was an honor to be asked to jury this show. Having been included in and rejected from many shows we are no strangers to the process, but now realize even more how difficult jurying can be.

The diversity of media and the variety of interpretations of the Black, White and Shades of Gray theme made the process challenging. In reviewing the submissions for this show, we were very subjective. On the first go-through we relied on our gut reaction. We then narrowed down the group to those pieces that had a particular element of creativity, uniqueness, or a thought-provoking message that drew us in. We also strived to create a balanced body of work that recognized the variety of submissions. Happily, as in many other projects we undertake together, we agreed on 99% of our choices.

Again, congratulations to the artists and thank you Stamford Art Association for providing a community and venue for us to share our work.

The Juror

Mike and Sally Harris have developed a passion for cultural photography. Over the past several years, they have traveled around the world capturing the essence of a place by photographing its people in their daily lives. Whether they are travelling with a group led by a professional photographer, or on their own, they look for interesting parts of the area that aren’t found in the tourist guides – such as a cattle auction in Oaxaca, Mexico or a fishing village in Colombia.

Mike and Sally are active members of two photography clubs: the Stamford Photography Club and The Ground Glass based in Rye, NY. They have exhibited in numerous shows around Fairfield County including the Stamford Art Association, the Carriage Barn, Greenwich Art Society and Rowayton Arts Center and enjoy presenting photo essays to various groups. Recently Mike published a coffee table book of his photographs called “Now You Can Take My Picture” that was well-received and has sold over 500 copies.
